The Renaissance Man

Maki Yamaguchi’s portrait of jazz musician Victor Goines appears on the cover and inside pages of Boston University College of Fine Arts’ magazine.

Maki was initially commissioned to create the artwork for the opening spread of a feature on Victor Goines, whose career has spanned decades of touring, teaching and community work. When the magazine saw the finished portrait, it was also chosen for the cover!

The mixed-media piece combines loose watercolour with pencil marks and finer details, placing Goines and his instrument at the centre of the composition. It accompanies the magazine’s feature on his decision to return to education at Boston University, adding another chapter to a career shaped by music and teaching.
