Sports and fitness illustration is a more diverse category than many realise. It covers everything from professional athletes and their clubs through to recreational exercise such as dance or Park Run, and even wellbeing-oriented activities like yoga.
When the emphasis is on physical prowess, the illustrator needs to capture the action and dynamism of the sport – often with expressive line work and colour. The artwork might also reflect the fan’s experience, statistics and broadcast or social media commentary. When mental health is the focus, often a more tranquil treatment is called for.
